Pi Pi Omega Chapter Program Initiatives

Global Leadership Through Timeless Service Emerging Young Leaders (EYL)
(2010-2014)

This Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority signature program will impact the lives of 10,000 girls internationally in grades six through eight. The program provides leadership development, civic engagement, enhanced academic preparation and character building. Pi Pi Omega Chapter’s Emerging Young Leaders Program takes place in Westbury Middle School. We focus on sixth graders and hope to have them continue through their Middle School years. Our EYL group consists of 25 girls. At each session we have a host of chapter member participants who are proud to share their varied skills and expertise. Our workshop sessions are divided into four AKAdemies, each consisting of at least four workshop sessions in:
  • Character Building
  • Leadership Development
  • Educational Enrichment
  • Civic Engagement
The EYL girls are very enthusiastic and look forward to workshops, guest speakers, great activities and trips as they continue to develop into future leaders.

Health Initiatives
Health Initiatives-Breast Cancer Walk

These initiatives encourage personal fitness and healthy lifestyles. We annually support the American Cancer Society and the Lupus Foundation of America by actively participating in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk at Jones Beach as well as the Lupus Walk in Long Island.

Annually we participate in the National Night Out Against Crime event where we conduct health screenings for blood pressure and distribute literature regarding diabetes, cholesterol, heart disease and other health issues. We also distribute healthy snacks and literature on nutrition.

Pi Pi Omega members had lots of fun participating in the Biggest Loser Competition, an on-line challenge to lose weight and become healthier.

Global Poverty
The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority international goals of this initiative are to end hunger, preserve the environment and empower women. Pi Pi Omega chapter has addressed this initiative by organizing a food drive of non-perishable food items which were sent to Haiti after their devastating earthquake. We also sent seeds to Haiti to help the people grow crops to meet their future needs.

Birth kits were also compiled for community distribution providing essential items for newborns. To provide outreach to our community, we contribute to local church food pantries and we aid local high school girls by conducting a Prom Dress Drive. We donate prom dresses and accessories that the girls can wear to that special occasion.

Social Justice and Human Rights
This initiative addresses social equality issues and provide services that assist in empowering people. Pi Pi Omega annually conducts voter registration drives during our National Night Out Against Crime activity. We also closely work with organizations such as the League for Women Voters and the NAACP in their constant quest for equality and justice.
